Tuesday Night Plein Air and Reference Photo Classes

Tuesday Night Plein Air and Reference Photo Classes

$25.00

The class: Class will focus on one of three areas: Plein air painting at McFeaters Cove at Yellow Creek State Park, capturing reference photos for studio painting in Indiana Borough, and/or finishing the plein air paintings in-studio on rainy days. We will take full advantage of the first sunny days by painting and photographing outside, and will fill in gloomy days or the last two sessions with indoor work.

Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm on Tuesdays in July.

Location: Weather dependent. I will email you every week with the location. On the first two sunny days we experience, we will meet at McFeaters Cove at Yellow Creek State Park (North Shore.) In order to be respectful of people who frequent the marina, I am limiting the Yellow Creek class size to 10 people and two sessions. On the third sunny day, we will meet under the marquis at the Indiana Theater Building (637 Philadelphia Street) and will walk through town discussing lighting, subject matter, and compositions for reference photos. On overcast days, we will work in my studio (#308 in the theater building) from our reference photos.

Cost: $25 per session. Purchasing this one-time-fee buys one class. No refunds are provided for no-shows or last minute cancellations. Students must bring all supplies.

You can come to one or all of the classes. I encourage signing up for at least two classes (preferably one outdoor and one indoor) to continue working on a finished painting.

The itinerary: Every class will go slightly differently. On sunny days, we will be outdoors. On gloomy days or for the last two classes, we will be in the studio. If there are no sunny days, I will have printed photos of the boats at McFeaters Cove that we can work from, and we can focus on the idea of painting from photographs. In this case, I will also have samples of less-than-optimal reference photos for comparison.

If working from life: we will first discuss the best place to set up our easels, the materials needed, and composition. The purpose of class is to focus on simplification and massing in the shapes. On subject matter gathering day, we will focus on lighting and composition. You can bring your phone or camera for this, but note that this portion will not provide instruction on camera settings.

Material list: (I encourage you to invest in quality paint such as Rembrandt or Gamblin to avoid frustration!) I also encourage good quality, sharp brushes. Frayed, overly stiff or overly limp, worn brushes will not produce a good result. Acrylic and watercolor paint are also prohibited because they require a different technique.
